Real Tax Free vs. Tax Refund: they are not the same thing

Retailers often use "Tax Free" and "Tax Refund" as if they were interchangeable. They're not. The two models handle the VAT exemption at completely different moments, and that difference changes what your customer actually pays, how much effort they need to put in, and how likely they are to complete the process at all.

As a recent Forbes España op-ed argued, most of what gets sold to travelers in Spain as "Tax Free" is, in practice, a Tax Refund: the traveler pays full price and only recovers part of the VAT later, if they complete the process at all (Forbes España).

How Tax Refund (the traditional model) works

With traditional Tax Refund intermediaries, the customer pays the full price in your store, VAT included. The retailer issues the Tax Free invoice, and the customer validates it at customs when leaving the EU.

From there, the customer has to go through a separate refund process with the intermediary, which typically comes with hidden fees and confusing procedures. On a purchase where the shelf price is €121, the customer doesn't get that full VAT amount back. After the intermediary's commission and processing fees, they end up recovering only part of it, often landing around €101.99 net, well below what a direct VAT removal would deliver.

How Real Tax Free (with STAMP) works

With STAMP Real Taxfree, the exemption happens at the point of sale, not after it. The customer pays the VAT-free price immediately in store. There's no refund to chase because there's no refund needed.

On that same €121 shelf price, the customer with Real Tax Free simply pays €100 in store. No forms to submit afterward, no waiting period, no intermediary taking a cut. Validation at customs still happens, exactly as it does with traditional Tax Free, but it confirms an exemption the customer already received, rather than triggering a refund they're still waiting on.

Why this difference matters for your store

The gap between €100 and €101.99 isn't just a customer inconvenience. It directly affects your business:

  • Conversion at checkout. A customer who sees the VAT-free price immediately is more likely to complete the purchase, and more likely to add to their basket knowing the effective cost is lower.
  • Completion rates. Many customers who are owed a refund never finish the process. That means the store recorded a Tax Free transaction that never gets validated, creating compliance gaps down the line.
  • Perceived value. A customer who pays €121 and eventually recovers something close to €101.99 after fees and delays doesn't feel like they got a deal. A customer who pays €100 on the spot does.
  • Store differentiation. Tourists increasingly know the difference between the two models. Offering instant VAT removal instead of a refund promise is a competitive advantage they notice.

Which model should your store offer?

If your store currently works with a traditional Tax Refund intermediary, your customers are likely paying more, waiting longer, and completing fewer transactions than they would with a direct point-of-sale exemption. Moving to a Real Tax Free model doesn't just simplify the process, it changes the numbers your customer sees at the register, which is often the difference between a completed sale and an abandoned one.

The difference between the two models comes down to a single moment:
does the customer feel the benefit at checkout, or do they have to wait and hope for it later?

Stores using Real Tax Free remove that uncertainty entirely, replacing a refund process prone to fees and drop-off with an instant, transparent price the customer sees before they even reach the register. For retailers, that translates into higher completion rates, stronger conversion, and a shopping experience that matches what international customers now expect.
